Wide Area Network Software

Updating Agents across the internet

VIPER Enterprise & Enterprise Premium can deploy and communicate with agents across the internet. This is accomplished through the use of Network Address Translation (NAT). In order for agents to properly communicate, you should follow these steps:

1. Setup your Firewalls
  On your Business Router/ Firewall:

  1. Allow ports 18082 and 18086 inbound and outbound to the VIPRE Enterprise Server.
  2. Allow SOAP traffic (if your firewall blocks at the protocol level).
On your Remote Agents Router/Firewall:

  1. Allow ports 18082 and 18086 inbound and outbound to the VIPRE Enterprise Agent.
  2. Allow SOAP traffic (if your firewall blocks at the protocol level).

Note: Some firewalls may block SOAP over HTTP. You will need make sure your firewall allows this communication type.

2. Create a Policy for Remote Agents
Additionally, you will need to configure a policy for your remote agents. To create the policy, do as follows:

  1. From the console, click the new policy button
  1. Name the policy something appropriate, like “Remote Agents.”
  2. Double-Click the new policy.
  3. Under Agents>Communication, enter the IP address (not the server name) of your policy and update server on the Wide Area Network (WAN). Usually, this is the address issued to your by your internet service provider and will not begin with: 10, 172, or 192.  Note that this address is NOT the internal address of your server!
3. Create an Agent Install Package
When deploying agents across a WAN, it is recommended to use a Deployment Package for the sake of simplicity. You can create a deployment package by doing as follows:
  1. From the Main console window, choose Agent Deployment>Create MSI Installer Package.
  2. Choose the remote policy.
  3. Push OK.
  4. Save the Policy to an appropriate location.
  5. Deliver the policy to your remote agents through a USB device or an FTP server.
4. Distribute the Package
The administrator will then need to distribute this installer to their clients by whatever method required by their company (Group Policy, Network Share, Jump Drive, CD).
5. Install the Package
The client should install the agent while connected to the Internet. At install time, the agent needs to communicate with the VIPER Enterprise service in order to obtain the full policy and initial threat definitions

Considerations when configuring the policy:

  1. You may not be able to ping the agents in the wild, therefore the Agent status heartbeat every xxxx minutes interval needs to be set to a value acceptable to the administrator. The agent will only be able to obtain a policy change when it makes periodic "hello" calls back into the service. Initially, when the agents are first deployed, the administrator may want to set this to a lower value until the policy is configured to the administrator's satisfaction. At this time, the administrator may want to increase that interval in order to decrease the traffic between the agent and the service.
  2. The agent will be able to obtain threat database updates directly from the server. If for some reason it is unable to connect to that server, the agent can be configured to obtain threat database updates directly from Sunbelt. Simply check the box (Download via the Internet if local updates are unavailable) on the Agent Settings area of the policy.
  3. Throttling the threat database updates will be very important as well, just to keep from saturating the connection to the Internet with threat db update traffic. By default, the application is set with a 100ms interval between 67KB chunks of data sent to the agent. This delay interval can be set anywhere from 0 all the way up to 60,000ms or 60 seconds between chunks. Therefore, even if you have very narrow network pipe, you should still be able to satisfy the threat database update requests without saturating your network.
